We wuz robbed! By four-legged, masked bandits who, in the middle of the night, raided all of our rack packs and handlebar bags of chocolates, power bars, and other snacks, even though we were spread out in three separate campsites. One of the group fended off the thieves by throwing rocks as he rescued his pack, but the rest of us were oblivious. Nothing was damaged, but I'm guessing those raccoons will be coming down from a sugar high for some time.
Good ride today. Lots of dipsey-doodling around the countryside, but done at relaxed pace. I was riding with JB, who normally puts his head down and goes, and I introduced him to the joys of taking breaks along the route, which may take longer to complete the day's ride, but makes it much more enjoyable.
The only fly in the ointment were the dogs that tried to attack us as we rode by their homes. It's amazing how many aren't fenced or tied up, and how aggressive they are, regardless of size. Unfortunately, a small beagle that came after me was struck by JB. It wasn't seriously injured, and we did see it limp off the road, but the incident put a bit of a pall over the next few miles. We didn't stop to check on the dog for fear how the owners, if home, would react. This is rural Louisiana, after all. We were told later in camp that others had seen the dog, and although it did bark at them, it didn't leave its yard, so perhaps a lesson has been learned.
Met a self-supported couple from New York, Carol and Steve, who are doing the Southern Tier on a tandem pulling a Bob trailer. They're experienced cycle-tourers, having done the Trans-America and the Underground Railroad routes in the past.
We're entering antebellum country; mossy trees, Southern mansions, old back roads past sharecroppers' shacks. I feel I'm in P. J. Beaumont territory.
We're staying at the Maxey Care RV Park; sounds like a seniors' care home, doesn't it. Dinner went well, chicken and sausage gumbo over rice, salad, and king cake for dessert.
