A cool, overcast, windy, lazy ride today. Didn't have a lot of energy for some reason, but since it was a short day, there was no sense of urgency to get to the park.
This state park is very reminiscent of Shuswap Provincial Park, and the great times our family spent there in our tent trailer. Good memories.
Watched a crawdad fisherman at work today. I was cycling past large ponds which looked very much like the fish ponds on the kibbutz in Israel, and noticed a boat-type contraption working its way down a line of buoys toward me. It eventually wound up at rest next to the road, so I took the opportunity to have a closer look. The buoys marked baskets, much like lobster pots, and the fisherman would haul each up and empty it onto a sorting table. The boat, by the way, was powered by a large stern wheel contraption that actually dug into the pond bottom to propel the skiff forward. The water was shallow enough that another fisherman (craw dad picker?) was doing the same job in another pond wearing hip waders and pulling a skiff. Each basket is baited with a fish head. Apparently, the craw dad ponds are alternately turned into rice paddies, much like letting a field lie fallow.
Also spent a few minutes watching a crop duster. Those guys are amazing. Tried to get a photo, but the plane was too fast, and I and the camera were too slow.
Long day tomorrow, 75+ miles, and it's my cooking day! Going to try a gumbo concoction that Nicole found. This could be very interesting right before our weekend in NO.
