A glorious day for a ride; smooth roads, bright sun, moderate winds, climbable hills (except for the last one on the outskirts of Austin that nearly did me in), and little traffic until we got close to the big city.
Had a nice chat with a self-contained coupe, Susan and Frank May of Georgia, who are doing the east to west route. They've had more severe weather than we, but better winds, so it all evens out in the end.
Also met a couple of University of Texas female students who were out for a training ride, wearing Livestrong 4000 jerseys. They, along with 43 other students, are leaving Austin on May 31 to ride to Anchorage, Alaska to raise money for cancer research. Each rider has to raise a minimum of $4500; one has surpassed $25 000! Idon't mean to sound sexist, but these two girls were tiny (I originally thought they were high school students), and they plan to ride high-end road bikes, with just two front rings. They'll be fully supported, which is good, because I fear there will be some mechanical issues along the way. They may be passing through our area, so I'll keep an eye open down the line.
We're staying in an old retro motel in the funky part of Austin. Lots of cafés and little shops in the area. Could be fun exploring tomorrow. We're out for dinner tonight, hosted by a local who rode the tour with Paul and Nicole a couple of years ago.
