Day 34 - Friday, April 11

Austin, TX to La Grange, TX - 80 miles - 1815 total.

We had an interesting start to the day. Because the route out of Austin was somewhat convoluted, we all rode together under Paul's guidance. I imagine we were quite a sight; 13 riders, dressed in all sorts of colourful gear, large triangle on the back, playing follow-the-leader through traffic. In any case, Paul delivered us safely to the city's outskirts, and then we were on our own.
It was a good day for a ride. And it was a good ride. Nuff said.
Our route took us through the Bastrop State Park, which was virtually wiped out by the devastating wildfires that hit the hill country three years ago. The area is coming back through replanting and natural growth, and is very reminiscent of our area after the fires of 2003.
Tons of wild flowers along the route today; red, blue, orange, yellow, purple, pink, and white. I felt like stopping every five seconds to snap a picture of yet another colourful display. No wonder I was in the saddle for 6 1/2 hours!

It's interesting that the natural burial site should have plastic flowers on its fence.

A different sort of colour: little flags marking seedlings.
