Day 38 - Tuesday, April 15

Kountze, TX to Merryville, LA - 65 miles - 2080 miles total

No wifi on Tuesday.

Mother Nature is a capricious being. She giveth, and she taketh away.
After yesterday's drenching, we awoke to a clear, sun-filled sky. Unfortunately, the humidity had been replaced by a bitter north wind that dropped the temp to 37 degrees; that's 3 Celcius. However, despite the fact that I had sent my cold-weather clothing home from Austin, I still had my arm and leg warmers, and a few other items, so although I wasn't exactly toasty, neither was I numbed by the cold.
I mentioned the north wind; did I mention that we rode in a north-north-east direction for most of the 65 miles? It was a long, long day. The only saving grace was that there were few inclines, or the day would have felt even longer.
And then we crossed into Louisiana, and all was right with the world. :)
At the "Welcome to Louisiana" sign, Nicole had put out balloons, a poster, and a gift box of chocolates and bottles of Starbucks iced cappuccino for us to celebrate our leaving Texas after 19 days.
We're being hosted tonight by the Merryville Historical Society, and are camping outside their museum. They provided us with dinner tonight, sausage gumbo on rice, potato salad, sweet tea and chocolate cake, and will be cooking breakfast for us in the morning, just because they're happy we're staying over. It's supposed to be cold again tonight, so a hot breakfast will be appreciated.
A few members of the theatre society showed up in Civil War-era costumes to add authenticity to our meal, and to give us some local colour. A most interesting dinner.
