Day 35 - Saturday, April 12

La Grange, TX to Novasota, TX - 69 miles - 1884 total.

Today was a good day. Partially sunny, not too hot, fairly smooth roads with only a few stretches of chip seal thrown in to remind us why we're keen to leave Texas, and moderate winds that for the most part pushed us from the side or behind except for the occasional head-butt to keep us honest.
What kept it from being a great day? The new fly in the ointment; humidity. That's right, we're definitely out of the desert and into the South. It wasn't bad today, but noticeable, like damp sticky noticeable. And I imagine it will only get more pronounced as we move east. Prepare for a new rant!
Saw lots more wild flowers, in cemeteries, fields, front yards, and rights of way.
Then there was the 10-mile stretch between Warrenton and Round Top that for two weeks in the Spring and another two in the fall is lined with antique vendors from across the state. Or one could say it's a 10-mile flea market. Six of one, etc... Anyhow, the vendor tents were being dismantled as we passed by, as the Spring show had just ended.
Had a great piece of strawberry-rhubarb pie at the 20-mile mark in Round Top. On a longish ride, I make it a point to stop for a snack every 10 miles from the 20 mile mark on, and I love it when a stop coincides with the opportunity to indulge in something other than what I packed for the day.
Our route crossed that of a two-day 150-mile MS ride from San Antonio to Austin that will have 10 000 riders taking part. We didn't see any riders, but the midway/overnight stop is La Grange, so we did see the massive preparations taking place. I can't imagine riding with 9 999 others. I'm very happy just toodling along on my own, thank you.
Word is we're riding into thunderstorms over the next two days, which makes me thankful we'll be staying at a motel tomorrow, and in a church hall on Monday. At least we won't be packing up our tents in the rain. Still, it's quite amazing we've only had one iffy day of weather in 35 days. Our luck's bound to change; just not yet, please.

Pie break at 20 miles.
